Candidate Filing Day (NMSA § 3-8-27A)

(Between 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) Candidates must file Declaration of Candidacy.  This is the ONLY opportunity for a candidate to file to run for office.

A certified copy of candidate’s current affidavit of voter registration on file with the Sandoval County Clerk which has been certified by that office on a date not earlier than the adoption of the election resolution. (Anticipated to occur on November 15, 2017.) Candidates’ affidavits of voter registration must show their address as a street address or rural route number, not as a post office box.

January 11, 2018

54 Days Prior

By 9:00 a.m. the City Clerk must post a list of names of those individuals who have been certified as candidates, as well, as those who have not been certified with the reasons they have not. (§3-8-27H)

Between 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. the candidate or authorized representative shall contact the City Clerk’s Office to ascertain whether his/her declaration of candidacy has been certified as valid. (§3-8-27D(5))

At 5:01 p.m. the City Clerk, in the presence of the certified candidates (or authorized representatives) who desire to be present, administers an impartial and fair drawing by lot to determine the order the candidates' names will appear on the ballot. The City Clerk draws for any candidate or his/her representative who is not present. (§3-8-29A)

January 15, 2018

50 Days Prior

Each candidate, person or committee shall appoint a Campaign Treasurer by 5:00 p.m. (§30.26)

January 16, 2018

49 Days Prior

Withdrawal of Candidacy.  Deadline for candidates to withdraw his/her candidacy by filing an affidavit in the City Clerk's office on a form provided by the City Clerk. The City Clerk shall not place on the ballot the name of any person who has filed such an affidavit by this date. (§3-8-27I)

January 16, 2018

49 Days Prior

Write-In Candidate Filing Day

(Between 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.)  No person can be elected as a write-in candidate unless certified as such by the City Clerk. All write-in candidates must file in person at the City Clerk's office.

This is the only date and time on which a write-in candidate may file for office. (§3-8-27L)

Write-in candidates shall file a certified copy of candidate’s current affidavit of voter registration on file with the Sandoval County Clerk which has been certified by that office on a date not earlier than the adoption of the election resolution. (Anticipated to occur on November 15, 2017.) Candidates’ affidavits of voter registration must show their address as a street address or rural route number, not as a P. O. Box.

January 18, 2018

47 Days Prior

By 9:00 a.m. the City Clerk must post in the office the names of those individuals who have been certified as declared write-in candidates as well as those who have not been certified with the reasons they have not. (§3-8-27L(4))

January 30, 2018

35 Days Prior

First day for absentee ballots may be mailed to voters, including Federal qualified electors and voters who applications have been accepted and approved. (3-9-4M)

First day absentee ballots may be cast in person on paper ballots. (§3-9-4J)

35 Days Prior

Deadline for declared write-in candidate to file affidavit of withdrawal to City Clerk. (§3-8-27L(5))

February 6, 2018

28 Days Prior

1st Campaign Report Due by 5:00 p.m. (§30.27 (C) (1) (a))

At 5:00 p.m. Sandoval County Clerk closes voter registration. (§1-4-8)

February 14, 2018

20 Days Prior

First day for early voting on voting machines in City Clerk’s Office. (§3-8-37.1 A)

March 2, 2018

Friday Immediately Preceding the Election

4 Days

Last day absentee ballots can be mailed out (§3-9-4M)

Last day to cast absentee/early ballots in person on paper or on machine (until 5:00 p.m.). (§3-8-37.1 A)

Deadline for candidates to file a petition for appointment of a challenger, watcher and alternates for each polling place.  City Clerk verifies the proposed appointees are qualified to serve. ((§3-8-31 B)

March 5, 2018

2nd Campaign Report Due by 12:00 NOON. (§30.27 (C) (1) (b))

March 6, 2018

Election Day – Polls open from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. (§3-8-38D)

March 12, 2018

By 7:00 p.m. on this date, the City Clerk or anyone authorized by law to administer oaths, administers the oath of office to each elected candidate. (§3-8-33B)
