Water Resource Management Plan (WRMP)
We want to hear from you
The City of Rio Rancho is updating the Water Resources Management Plan and we want to hear from you! We have developed a survey for citizens to complete that will give us feedback about our community's priorities regarding water conservation, water reuse, water supply and infrastructure, etc. Click here to submit your input.
The Water Resource Management Plan outlines and prioritizes the City’s water resources policy initiatives, identifies lists of actions in support of each initiative, as well as the responsible parties, and provides a schedule for implementation. The Plan is updated every five years and the City has received a grant from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to assist with completing this most important update.
The Plan policies and recommendations are laid out into seven broad categories:
• Water Conservation
• Education and Outreach
• Water Reuse
• Water Supply and Infrastructure
• Source Water Protection
• Economic Development
The focus of the update was revision. It took the original implementation plan and made subtractions, additions, and reprioritization of the internal components. Several planning meeting were held with City staff, Utility Commission, Environmental Programs Section, and the Water Resources Standing Committees to discuss water conservation and water resources for the City. The ideas and concepts from these meetings were taken to a public meeting in December 2013. The public was asked to make suggestions and recommendations to the report that may have been missed by the City staff. At the meeting, the public was also asked to rate the implementation policies from most important to less important. These recommendations and implementation policy ratings were incorporated into the 2014 WRMP.
The State Water Trust Board considers funding to projects if the projects are conductive to supporting implementation of the 2014 WRMP. The City can additionally seek federal funding sources that require a water conservation plan.
