On Monday, May 27, the City of Rio Rancho will recognize Memorial Day with a remembrance ceremony honoring the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in military service to their country. The ceremony will take place at the Veterans Memorial Park, and will begin at 11 a.m. The ceremony will include the laying of a wreath to honor the fallen. Speakers will include Mayor of Rio Rancho Greggory D. Hull and various military personnel. Mayor Hull will pay special tribute to a veteran who volunteers for the City of Rio Rancho.
For the first time ever, military boots representing fallen service members will also be on display at Veterans Park. The boots will be laid out in pairs, and some will have a personalized tag or portrait of a fallen soldier, his or her unit, and date of passing. The boots representing fallen service members will be on display at Veterans Park for one day as a powerful, temporary memorial. Both the memorial ceremony and boot display are organized by Rio Rancho's own Marine Corps League Detachment 1316, American Legion Post 118 and VFW Post 5890.
Anyone who would like to loan or donate boots or provide a portrait of a fallen service member may call City Hall at 891-5015. For questions about the ceremony, please call the Rio Rancho Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department at (505) 891-5015.
