The Water Wise Garden is nestled between the Esther Bone Library and Veterans Memorial Park at 950 Pine Tree Road. The Garden is a joint effort between Sandoval County Master Gardeners, Rio Rancho Water Conservation Department and the City of Rio Rancho Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. This little piece of landscape paradise shows all new comers to the high desert what types of plant material will grow and bloom. The garden features xeriscape principles, effective drip/bubbler/timer spray irrigation, and the use of mulch to conserve moisture and prevent heat island effects.
Master Gardners use the garden as a teaching tool and are
preparing an online teaching guide. The Water Wise Garden received the
International Master Gardener Search for Excellence Award in 2009. The
Garden was also featured on HGTV Gardening by the Yard with Paul James,
that same year. The garden is a must see in any season as volunteer work
continues to improve this tiny bit of paradise.
