Road Repair

Road Repair is only performed on City owned paved roads.  For information about Dirt Road Maintenance, click here.

Each year, our Public Works Department assesses the City’s paved roads. The roads are categorized into six (6) classifications: Good, Satisfactory, Fair, Poor, Very poor, Failed. We categorize the roads using a national standard. Using this and other data, the City then prioritizes the roads based on health and safety considerations; planned improvements to utility lines; higher volume over lower volume roads (this is the number of cars on the road per day); and long term preservation of existing assets. Learn more about the roads selected for this year on our Neighborhood Streets Improvement Project.

Road (Crack) Patching:

Crack patching is maintenance to prolong pavement life by minimizing water infiltration into the base course or subgrade. Crack patching is used on all asphalt pavements, and only in cracks that are greater than two (2) inches wide. Crack patching should be finished before Pavement Surface Sealing is completed.

Road Crack Sealing:

Crack sealing is maintenance to prolong pavement life by minimizing water infiltration into the base course or subgrade.  Crack sealing is used on all asphalt pavements, and only for cracks that are less than or equal to two (2) inches wide.  Crack sealing should be finished before Pavement Surface Sealing is completed.

Potholes:

For potholes the City mobilizes a crew every other Friday to repair these requests.  Generally, it can take up to six (6) weeks to repair potholes depending on the severity of the pothole.  Again, we prioritize high traffic volume roads over low traffic volume roads for this work.

For service requests for potholes please utilize Report Rio Rancho.

Pavement Maintenance Information:

  • It is important to note that pavement maintenance is done to extend the life of the existing pavement and improve driving surfaces.  It is only after the pavement’s life is near the end that a full reconstruction, completely repaving the road, will take place.
